Electronic music is a genre that has broadened so much over the past few decades, that it's become increasingly difficult to find a record that's considered to be an official point of entry. I will tell you this: if you're looking for a start in the genre, Daft Punk's Discovery is the perfect start. Daft Punk may have come from a house music background, which leaves something like ambient techno or IDM out of the equation entirely, but it's essential if you're coming to electronic from rock and pop backgrounds. After all, the first set of tracks on Discovery are purely immediate, and much of the album is pretty much pop/rock songs with electronic/disco touches: "One More Time" has THAT vocal hook and is the epitome of 'in the moment' music. Meanwhile, "Digital Love" is simply wonderful, and an extended guitar solo that caps it off perfectly (as well as a Wurlitzer that isn't too far off from Supertramp), while "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is unique in chopping up not just the vocals, but the samples that works around it in as many ways as possible. Slower songs like "Something About Us" and "Veridis Quo" provides a nice break from the insane dance tracks, with that latter not sounding too far away from the classic Legend of Zelda games. Daft Punk have always made music for the soul, and Discovery not only touches you emotionally but also makes you feel the music when it's playing. Not one second is considered filler, making it one of the most consistent albums ever made.
